What fisheries do you participate in? Crab, catfish, and perch. Started out as a striped bass fishermen.

Currently fishes with: crab pots, fish pots, and fyke net.

How many years have you been a fisherman? I have been a Watermen all my life. I started working as a waterman when I was a kid at 10 years old. When I graduated high school I’ve been working full time on the water ever since.

What is the best part about being a fisherman? Every day is a holiday! Every morning is like Christmas morning. You never know what the Lord is going to send you!

What is the worst part about being a fisherman? Dealing with politics. I can handle everything else, but dealing with the politics is really getting discouraging. When politics override good science & management it gets really discouraging.

Positions: President of the Anne Arundel Watermen’s Association, Treasurer of Maryland Watermen’s Association, Commission Member of Maryland Seafood Marketing Commission for 12 years, Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission Advisory Panel, almost every Maryland Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Management Committee.

Why is it important to you to keep the profession of commercial fishing alive in this country? I have worked on water all my life. I take pride in having made have made a good honest living for my family. I have put 2 daughters through college and both work with me now. I take a lot of pride in making sure people get good, fresh & local seafood.

In your opinion, what is the biggest concern facing the ocean and our marine resources? Poor water quality.

Favorite Seafood Recipe:
Bob Evans Crab Cake Recipe:

  • 2 lbs of Maryland Blue Crab backfin crabmeat
  • 1 lb Maryland Blue Crab claw crabmeat

Mix crabmeat with 30 mashed up premium saltine crackers
Mix together in bowl:

  • 2 jars of pimentos
  • 2 tablespoons of J.O. Crab Spice, no salt

In a quart container put in 6 heaping tablespoons of Helman’s Mayonnaise.

  • 2 tablespoons of prepared mustard
  • 6 eggs

Put them in quart container and shake until everything is mixed.

Dump the quart mixture in the crab meat mixture bowl, mix all ingedients together. Place in refrigerator for minimum of 10 hours.

Then form into crab cakes and fry in Margarine.

Wait to cool and then eat!
